If you're talking Normal Mode; Meh. Anything works in Normal Mode. Other team builds are miles ahead of B/P teams in general play, and you'll have a much harder time of it in Hard Mode. Rangers in general are in a rough spot in PvE right now, they're usually better off with a Scythe or Daggers than bows, and the AI is horrible with positioning.
All-in-all, you'd get more mileage out of a balanced team, Spirit Spam, playing with the new mesmer toys, or pretty much anything else.

Run a Scythe Pet ranger. As your heroes bring an ER prot, an SoS with physical buffs, and a minion bomber.

Depending on my setup I'll occasionally bring a pet, usually when I'm running scythe, daggers, or when the mood hits me (IE lazy), Discord caller. Actually not too bad either; the spammable deep wound elite is nice with daggers (basically 1,2,3,4 move to next target) I'll use Scavenger Strike a lot if the build is energy intense. A dire pet isn't half bad DPS either if you've the points invested into beastmastery.. not the best of course but not bad and it's fun to play with.
If I'm running with a bow though I usually never bring a pet, never really found the need.. with the mediocre at best pet AI, by the time I start shooting and the pet runs in, the mob is already dead.

Yeah thats exactly what I do. Micro Splinter Weapon on you and watch things explode. Oh and SoH from the ER Protter. And if you want Micro MoP on enemies for a mega spike.
Wounding Strike [E]
Mystic Sweep
Eremite's Attack
"I Am The Strongest"
Scavenger Strike
Never Rampage Alone
Aura of Holy Might
Confort Animal
Sometimes I swap out "I Am The Strongest!" and Never Rampage Alone for Dwarven Stability and Lightning Reflexes if I need more tanking potential.
With Aura Of Holy Might, SoH, and "IAtS" I have hit 150+ on some enemies in HM.

If I'm running a normal build, I find that pets still suck. The buffs last year were nice, but considering that the AI is still completely braindead, they weren't enough to warrant the wasted skill slots and attribute points that could be in expertise or my weapon skill.
On the other hand, I've found that when using a certain Triple-Necro build that doesn't actually require any points in any ranger attributes and has a lot of spare slots, 4 pet slots can make for some fun.
R/A - AP EVAS Discord Caller Pet
Beast Mastery - 12 + 3 + 1
Deadly Arts - 12
Weap: Bodahbi's Spire
Enduring Toxin/Asuran Scan (Cover/backup hex)
"You're all weaklings!" - Long-lasting AoE condition
Assassin's Promise (Duh)
Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support (Duh Part II)
Call of Haste/Call of Protection (Depending on how much of a pounding you expect)
Poisonous Bite (Backup condition)
Scavenger Strike (Backup Energy Recovery)
Comfort Animal
All the backups are because sometimes GW is evil and your AP expires without killing it, leaving you and your discord heroes dead in the water for 45 seconds. It's worked really well so far on my quest for Vanq of Tyria (Exceptions: Majesty's Rest (Rotscale), Deldrimor Bowl and Anvil Rock (Mobs of 3+ condition-removal and Aura spamming monks) and owns face in Echovald Forest.
